Pit Bull Fights

People think they know a thing or two about the pit bull's fighting history, some of what they know are indeed facts but other information consists of nothing but myths that have been altered by the media trying to make the pit bull look dangerous and ferocious. Throughout history the pit bull has been known as a fighting dog. However, when pit bulls first came to this country in the 1800's they were known as farmer dogs, they guarded homes of people's gaining the trust of people. As time went by, bad people started to abuse these dogs by putting them into brutal fights against each other. The checked past of pit bulls combined with the myths that are perpetrated by people who are scared of the breed is combining to put the future of this breed into doubt.  This is unfortunate because despite their history of fighting in the ring, the pit bull is actually a very good family dog.

Now there have been new forms of dog fights, and their attempts to making these dogs distressful and fearful is horrific. According to pitbulltopics.wordpress.com says, "So apparently there is this new form of cruelty to Pit Bull called "Trunking" . This is when two pit bulls are locked in the trunk of a car to fight to the death while someone drives them around and just turns the radio up so loud that no one can hear the dogs fight."  What this quote shows is that people don't care about these dogs. And for what we know there could be other types of cruelty through the world harming the pit bulls.

The pit bull might have a bad history behind them, but it does not mean they have to be stereotyped by saying all dogs are dangerous and that they are all fighting dogs.
According to petfinder.com, "Pit Bulls are very eager to please people. A Pit Bull will do almost anything his favorite people ask him, just to hear their praise. These dogs crave our attention and approval, and are very social with humans." These quote shows that all pit bulls are easy to be manipulated. But if you treat them right the way very dog should be treated then there is so reason why people should be afraid of this breed. Even when good trained dogs get in a dangerous situation with their loyal owner they will do all that it takes to protect them.

Should We Ban the Pit Bull?

From 1982 to 2013 pit bulls have been responsible for most of the dog attacks in the United States. People are starting to say that we should get rid of this breed for once and for all, but that is not the right way to go, not only because it would be inhumane but also because these dogs can be trained for good. There are a lot of people that think that the pit bull should just be euthanize or put away in some isolated place, where it can't harm anybody. People there are also those positive people who think there is a better way to treat the pit bull. In the article Get Rid of Pit Bulls the author says, "Pit Bull lovers righteously defend the "misunderstood" breed, but Charles Leerhsen, whose dog was recently attacked by one, says they are natural-born killers." These dogs can attack their owners, that is what makes people concern.

The "Breed Specific" legislation (BSL) is a law that regulates or bans certain dogs in the hope for reducing dog attacks. According to the ASPCA, "Some city/municipal governments have enacted breed-specific laws. However the problem of dangerous dogs will not be remedied by the "quick fix" of breed-specific laws or, as they truly be called, breed-discriminatory laws." As of this law there many other dogs that are regulated not only the pit bull. These shows that there other types if breed that are dangerous as much as the pit bull, not only because of their reputation but because of the way they behave in public. "Prince George's county ,MD, spends $250,000 annually to in force the ban on Pit Bulls. In 2003, a study conducted by the county on the ban's effectiveness noted that "public safety is not improved as a result of [the ban]." There is no truthful evidence that this method is working to reduce public safety from dog attacks.

Even by having regulations on any type of breed there will be still dog attacks. And people instead of following the law they try to hide their beloved pets by keeping them in home without letting them go outside. There are also those good owners who have a dog that is regulated but their dog has not done anything to harm others, or it has not attacked any others people but they still get into trouble for keeping them with them. People also tend to not care about the ban of their dogs, so they usually fake the identity of their dog's breed so that they don't get regulated or taken away. Either way there are always going to be dog attacks, but by having responsible people who train their dogs to be good there will be less attacks.

The Facts

It is no lie that the pit bull is one of the most dangerous dogs out there. The majority of the people fear the pit bull not only because of it's history as a fighting dog, but also because of their ferocious attitude. It is also no lie that the pit bull is more aggressive than others dogs when it comes for protection of others. As we look through the history of this dog we can see that it is one of the breeds that holds the crime for most people killed by a dog, along with the Rottweiler.

According to dogsbite.org, "Despite being regulated in Military Housing areas and over 700 U.S cities, pit bulls contributed to 64% (27) of the 37 deaths that occurred in 2014 alone." This does not only show the statistics on how deadly pit bulls can be, but it can also be used as an awareness to show that this breed is dangerous so we need to take caution. Even if a pit bull did not attack in their
lifetime, the risk is always there. Being aware that the pit bull can attack even to their owners is the first step to keeping those near him safe. The second step would be to keep the dog in a safe place where is not danger to others.

In the article Top 10 Most Dangerous Dog Breeds says, "To anyone who knows dogs, the American Pit Bull Terrier is no surprise at #1 on a list of deadliest dogs. In a study where the Pit Bull stood far ahead of all the other breeds with 66 fatalities attributed to it." Along with the Rottweiler coming in second with 39 fatalities. This statistic shows that the pit bull may be on the top of the list, but there are also other dogs to take in count. By letting people know what the problem is, and that is by telling them that the pit bull is a dangerous breed, we can prevent more deaths every year. We would have to encounter less fatalities everyday not only by being aware of the pit bull but also by other breeds.

The Pros and Cons

"For most of the 114 years since the American  pit bull terrier was first recognized by the United Kennel Club, the breed was rightly seen as the perfect "nanny dog" for children because of its friendly nature, loyalty and stability", as the article In Defense of the Pit Bull puts it. As you already might know there are many different points of view on how to feel about the breed of the pit bull. One of the most common one is the pros and cons. A lot of people might think that the pit bull is a safe dog. That it brings no harm or danger, but there are also those who think we should get rid of them.

As we take a look at this issue, the article In defense of the Pit Bull gives a good point on why this breed is harmless. The author of this article agrees that the dog can be aggressive and that they can be fierce full, but he has his reasons to why they are safe. As he says it in this article it all depends on the owner. If they are owned by a good person, then they will learn to protect them. If they are owned by a bad person, then they will use them for bad purposes like dog fights or in gangs to scare off other gangs. So the only reason they would use the pit bull is for its strength. Even though they do have a tendency to have significantly more criminal behavior than most of the others, is because they have bad owners who puts them in a situation to harm others. "Meanwhile advocates say that pit bulls are the most frequently abused, tortured, abandoned and euthanize breed of dog in the United States." As the author explains that because the pit bull is tortured, their aggressiveness displacement is put towards future owners.

In 2008 a California man was killed by one or more pit bulls, and the incident was reported by more then 285 media outlets. But in Jersey when a kid was killed by a Siberian Husky only 12 media outlets reported the incident. This just shows how the media tries to get people to think that the pit bull is a dangerous dog, even when they are just as dangerous as any other dog. According to DogsBite.org, "The pit bull's genetics are not in dispute. Many appellate courts agree that pit bulls pose a significant danger to society and can be regulated accordingly." With this being said is not the owners fault that have caused their aggression, it is their genes. Studies have been shown that the pit bull is naturally aggressive, and that their high pain tolerance is to never give up on a fight. From 2005 and 2013, pit bulls killed 175 Americans, about one citizen every 18 days, as the article puts it.

Even though these statistics show the horrible side of the pit bull, the owners have a major influence on how they behave. They do show sings of aggressiveness even when they are trained to behave in a good way, but mostly to show protection. The pit bull can cause serious bites that lead a lot of people into hospitals, but the truth is every dog is able to do that. They all have the potential to be aggressive weather they are being trained or weather they have it in their genes. We have to understand that if we don't help these type of breed to be a better dog, they will not help themselves.

The Before and Now of the Pit Bull

During the 19th century the Pit Bull was first "created" by mixing the English Bulldog and the Terrier. By breeding these two English dogs, it mixed the strength of the Bulldog with the agility of the Terrier to produce a dog that most people back then would use as a fighting dog, for their own good. According to the article in PitBulls.org "Dogs for Smart People", in the 1500's-1600's the early Bull Terriers were much heavier and were meant to be fighting dogs, the word "Pit" came by the name of the arena, and hence obtain the name Pit Bull.

Although in all 50 states dog fights are illegal, they still take place in many parts of the country. These are mostly organized in urban areas. Fighting dogs get conditioned to never give in a fight even if they are badly hurt or killed. The Pit Bull is known for their ferocious bite, and people also know them because they "don't let go". Their attack is to bite deep muscles, to hold on, to shake, and to cause ripping of tissues. They get trained by putting them together with either cats or rabbits to take their aggression towards them, or use them as bates.

Unfortunately, dog fights have become more informal, and they have become more popular in the last two decades. According to dogsbite.org, what we can do to help this issue is to regulate the Pit Bull's ownership and breeding. "In July 2009 issues of Animal People, the group estimated that of the 1,663,167 shelter dogs projected to be killed in 2009, Pit Bulls accounted for 58%". By reducing the population of this dog will help decrease of the serious mauling and killings of the Pit Bull.

People not only think that the Pit Bull is a ferocious dog but they also think they are not safe around any other being. Because of the traits this dog has, it makes him easier to be manipulated. And even though we might have the issue that they are most commonly use as a fighting dog, we can do something about it. By not doing anything, this issue won't get any better. Realizing that there are organizations to help this problem is enough to get people knowing about the situation.

The Five Big Question:

In this blog I will be talking about how the breed of Pit Bulls were thought to be naturally fighting dogs vs how they are truly safe. A lot of people think that the Pit Bull is an aggressive dog due to their history and how most of them are fighting dogs. Most of this dogs were trained to be fighting dogs, but the truth is the Pit Bull is as safe as any other dog. I want to change people's perspective on the Pit Bull, I want to show the positive and the negative (man made) side of this issue.

1. How did the Pit Bull originated?
2. Why do people think they are not safe?
3. How did they came to be a fighting dog?
4. Why is Pit Bull treated differently than the police dog?
5. Why do people think the Pit Bull can not be around any other dogs?
